Build Your Data Center
Data centers are booming but the path to power is complex. Permits, grid coordination, construction, ramp-up. Most companies can’t explain it well. Living inside the larger World of NRG, we took the intricate journey from site selection to full-scale operation and turned it into an interactive experience that walks decision-makers through every step.
The hardest part was the translation. We were handed technical jargon and bare bones flow charts and had to turn them into something that didn't take a PhD to understand. Seeing the end result makes that look simple. It wasn't. And we had only two months to get there.
The timeline meant nothing could happen in sequence. I had to run both production partners in parallel, Loica building the 3D tilt-shift world and Rogue Studio designing and building the site, each one working off the other's progress and ready to change direction on a dime.
We iterated through a lot of variations on how to navigate the phases. The animated videos needed to marry up perfectly, and our own grip on the content kept solidifying as we went. For example, starting with the fully built data center, then zooming out as it deconstructs to phase one, took a ton of thought and experimentation before we landed on it.
We won an Awwwards Site of the Day, and people started noticing on their own. It was around the clock, incredibly tedious work, with a lot of love poured into it. It also turned out really fun, which isn't something most energy companies get to say about their data center content.
